Length of Service

Length of service is typically one year, with the option to renew for a second.

Some sites may offer different time frame opportunities depending on the site, the year, and work availability.  Volunteers will be assisted in choosing their program with the help of the director of the volunteer program.

Some alternative time frames (in select sites only) could be:

  • alternative breaks (for groups only)

  • summer

*Please see volunteer sites for length of service availability for each site

* *Please note: long term volunteers are defined as those serving one full year or more; short term volunteers are defined as those serving less than 9 months

Volunteer Requirements

For long term service - Volunteers must be a college graduate (or at least 21 years old) at the time of service and a US citizen

For short term service - Volunteers must be at least 18 years old at the time of service and a US citizen

Stipends and Compensation

Compensation varies for short term volunteers.

For those who are volunteering for a year and in different geographical areas, there will be a small personal stipend, a shared community stipend, health insurance, and room and board.

Volunteers will live in community but the size of the community varies by site and by year.  Volunteers will live in an HM house or inexpensive housing will be provided.  An effort will be made to have several volunteers per site at the same time, but this depends on number of volunteers and length of time commitment.

Americorps Education Awards are available for long term, domestic volunteers (based on availability of awards).  For more information on Americorps awards and requirements, click here

Transportation

Transportation to and from the site will be provided to long-term volunteers.

Transportation at the site is the responsibility of the volunteer.  Some program transportation is available, but can't be guaranteed at every site.  Volunteers are allowed and encouraged to bring their own cars.

Health Insurance

Health insurance is provided for all long term volunteers.  Those volunteering for shorter periods of time are asked to provide their own health insurance.
